Port William Excursion

A fly, boat, walk day trip option to/from historic Port William.  This includes:

  • Scenic flight from Invercargill to Stewart Island;
  • 30 minute water taxi trip from Oban to Port William onboard Rakiura Water Taxi;
  • 3 hour walk from Port William to Lee Bay via Maori Beach;
  • Shuttle pick up from Lee Bay back to Halfmoon Bay.
  • Return flight to Invercargill.  This can be made on the same day or extended to include an overnight stay in Oban.

Port William was an early Maori settlement site and from the 1800’s provided a harbour for whalers and sealers. In the 1870’s a group of Shetland Island immigrants attempted to establish farms and a fishery here. This scheme failed – all that remains are the eucalyptus (gum) trees they planted along the beach front.

The track passes through Maori Beach – relics of early sawmilling can still be seen here. The walk ends at Lee Bay – gateway to Rakiura National Park.
